Roadhouse Episode 14: "The Jossverse pt. 1"

We discuss the things we like/don't like about the Jossverse, in the first part of a two part episode.

  1. "Where are the Asians? I thought they'd have more speaking parts." Yes, yes, yes. IMO that is the only real flaw in firefly. Also, Wash > Xander, but you're right, Joss kind of likes to contrast "Heroes" with "heroes" (the latter being unassuming goofy guys, although Wash is rather accomplished--and far more competent--in his own right. And I hadn't thought about sex in the buffyverse that ways but your right.

Also, like to believe that your drinking moonshine out of tha jar.

  3. Oh man I love you guys. I love me some Whedon-verse talk. I think Firefly's flaw was that the target viewership couldn't handle the slow wind-up. I loved what came to a head in Serenity with the Reavers and the whole secret planet government conspiracy type thing. I would have loved to have gotten more into the characters of River Tam and that whole conspiracy bit and everyone, but alas. As far as the Asian stuff goes it might have come out if it had gone on longer. The show is very character driven so I think it would have come into the world building eventually, but given everything that happened it just didn't work out that we the audience got to know anything with the limitations of one season and one movie.

Oh Buffy so many seasons so little space to talk about you. I don't know my favorite episode off the top of my head, but Hush definitely ranks up there. I never really thought about Buffy's mom like that before or her hanging out with Giles, but that's an interesting point to bring up. It all runs together in my head at this point, but I guess I always thought of it is that they were supposedly at Willow's or Xander's or at the school studying but not necessarily with Giles' all of the time and that's how Buffy's mom perceived it when in reality she was with Giles doing her slayer stuff.

I have to agree though that Whedon definitely has certain character archetypes he recycles or partly recycles. He also likes to use the same cast members. Nathan Fillion has been in Buffy, Dr. Horrible, Firefly/Serenity; Alan Tudyk was in Firefly and Dollhouse; Eliza Dushku the same; Amy Acker Angel and Dollhouse (poor Fred ;-;); etcetera. I think though he's a very character driven story teller just from looking at all of his works together so I'm wondering if he just kind of has the character type's always bouncing around in his head and then the story develops around certain things he wants to have happen to them so maybe that's just how it all comes together. I think you even can see a touch of it in The Avengers.

Can't wait to hear what you say about Dollhouse. It has some controversial spots that is for sure. Looking forward to Whedon-verse part two. :)

  4. From what I saw of behind the scenes stuff (Easter Eggs on the Serenity DVD), that Serenity is how they were going to wrap up Firefly since it got canned the first season. River's development into a pseudo-Buffy the Reaver Slayer was meant to be spread across a few seasons. But Fox, being what they are did two things:

    a) When Firefly premiered, the first episode was not shown. They opened the season with episode 2 because Fox didn't like the idea of a long first episode to set the stage, so to speak.

    b) Fox canned it after one year. Despite a rabid fan base imploring for more, Fox said, "Fuck ya'll, go watch Enterprise."

What I find especially interesting about Firefly are the female archetypes. Girl next door, traumatized waif, Amazonian warrior queen and the cultured entertainer.

Here is Nathan Fillion FTW(cuz he's one of my favorite actors of all time. Saucy, saucy, finger-licking good) singing. In a cartoon. Dressed up as a spiderman-- Brown Widow to be exact. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrP1_5XuKLI

  5. Can I just say, I love hearing people call Joyce out on her shitty parenting.

  6. 1) Joyce is a terrible parent

    2) Sex is bad is such a true theme! Especially with Buffy in Season 2 aka: loses innocence and your man turns into (literally) a demon!!

  7. I really like the factoid that Nicholas Brendon has an identical twin brother (who appeared in one of the Buffy's). And cheered when he turned up on Criminal Minds as Kevin Lynch.

I've just started watching "Dollhouse" on Netflix (Canada) and it's almost like a preliminary episode is missing. There's not one that sets up the whole premise but it's not that difficult to catch up with. I have to admit that, so far, it's not my favourite Whedon thing; I so loved Firefly and Serenity and lots of Buffy.

  8. I just watched Firefly, and I intend to hate Serenity on principle, no matter how much I end up liking it, bc they stole my name for a ship! Rude. Even so, I'll forgive Joss enough to watch Dollhouse because I really like the premise.

I'm excited to hear what you guys have to say about Dr. Horrible. IMO, it's the only Joss product worth the rabid fan base. Don't get me wrong, he has good stuff, but nothing I'd consider monumentally awesome.

  9. You guys definitely gave me food for thought, a lot of things that I didn't realize to think about while watching either of those shows. And totally going to rewatch Firefly to look for Han Solo! :D Can't wait for the next vid, you guys make me happy!
