THE WEEK OF NOTHING SERIOUS: The Mystery of Giles's Apartment

This weekend, I uncovered what might be the greatest mystery of all time:

What I figured was, someone, probably several someones, would answer my tweet and I would get my answer and that would be the end of it. And at first, that looked like the case:

"Okay, that's what I thought," I says to myself, I says. But then:

"Well, now I don't know what to believe," I think to myself, because I watched "A New Man," the episode where Giles turns into a demon (I'm a Buffy/Giles shipper and that one is full of "proof," okay?) and not only does Demon!Giles trash his apartment, but that's the "new apartment" I had been thinking of in the first place.

Things started getting weirder when people started remembering different times that Giles got a new apartment:

As you can see by the time stamps, this discussion has gone on for days now.

Still, a lot of people insisted that Giles never got a new apartment:

So, how did some of us come to the conclusion that he moved? Especially when many of us are all so certain?

Here's a shot of the apartment during season two, from the episode "Passion":

Not pictured: Me, making out with Giles on that uncomfortable looking couch.

And here's a picture of it from the season 4 episode, "Pangs":

Pictured: Way too much pointless brooding.

If you look past depressionsweatpants!Giles and sad!Angel (also known colloquially as just, you know, Angel), you can see it's the same damn apartment.

But I swear, I swear on my soul, that at some point, in some line of dialogue, someone mentions Giles's new apartment. Clearly, the only way I'm going to be satisfied is if I watch every single episode and get to the bottom of this.

While I'm doing that (and sewing until my fingers fall off, because YAY CHRISTMAS!), please to be enjoying the following, which is my favorite Buffy/Giles fic of all time. It's rated G, so don't worry about clicking on it and getting a landslide of smut or anything: 24, by Jacqui. Feel free to share any recs you might have, I know other B/Gers are out there. And don't forget to swing by yesterday's post for tons of cute animal links in the comments.

When I have our answer to this mystery, oh, you best expect I'll be updating this post.

  2. I'm so glad you included my drunk tweet. LOOK EVERYONE "I" AND "U" ARE JUST REALLY CLOSE TOGETHER ON THE KEYBOARD OK? Especially a phone swype keyboard.

  3. I love that your week of nothing serious involves Buffy. We could all use a little more Buffy in our lives to get us through life. :)

His apartment looked different to me too in season 4 but I think it's maybe because season 2 was so dark and we were actually seeing it in the daylight that made it seem different? I wasn't used to seeing it from the outside either but it was the same apartment.

  4. I marathon'd it a couple years ago (possibly as few as 1 year) and I really just think they changed the angle they usually filmed it from, and he didn't actually move.

    1. wow, there's a wiki entry on the apartment itself (only one mentioned, no mention of moving). http://buffy.wikia.com/wiki/Rupert_Giles's_apartment
Spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen the show...

    2. I just googled 'did giles have a new apartment' and got that page. So I think it must have been the only one.

He got a new car for sure, a sporty red one.

  5. I'm re-watching the series now. I'm in season 6, and I think it was the same apartment the whole way through until he left for England after Buffy died. He stays at her house after they bring her back, so no more apartment. And the he leaves again.

  6. I'm not a Buffy watcher, although I have seen a few episodes, but maybe he moved to adifferent apartment in the same building? All the apartments in my complex look the same, maybe that is what they are trying to pass it off as?

  7. Looks like someone definitely remodeled the fireplace at some point. The top is the same but all that weird tile work is gone? Maybe the set people were trying to pass it off as a "new" apartment?

  8. I've marathoned BtVS more times than I should admit in polite company. I always thought his apartment was different in season 4 - such as in "Pangs" when he has that kitchen and dining table area. My guess is that the apartment location may not have changed, but the interior/size of the apartment expanded because a lot of scenes in Season 4 are set at Giles' apartment because of what I shall refer to as the "Snake Incident" at the end of season 3.

  9. I've seen about two episodes and I don't even know which one Giles is, so excuse this link if it's useless and/or false (had to weed out some fic hits), but a new apartment is mentioned in this google result/apparent interview/thing with abstract punctuation. http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474976888012

    1. I do think they redid the set so they could film it from different angles, and do some outside shots. But I'm pretty sure it's the same apartment...

  10. There was a comment about his new apartment which is the one being debated. We never saw his old one, just the one pictured. It's been a while so I reserve the right to be wrong.

  11. It's the same apartment in seasons 2-4. If he did get a new apartment, it'd be after he left for England, either when Buffy died, as he stays on Buffy's couch when he returns. He might have got a new one when he came back in season 7 but it's never shown.

  13. An excuse to re-watch Buffy while alone in a foreign land over Christmas break! What a thoughtful gift! Oh, Jen, you shouldn't have. :)

  14. I just read every word of this post, despite the fact that I have never watched an episode of Buffy. How's that for dedication to your blog?

    2. I can cross the slow clap off my bucket list! I feel like I should start watching Buffy if it's on Netflix...

  15. "sad!Angel (also known colloquially as just, you know, Angel" This literally killed me. Or not, but you know what I mean. Some of my favorite lines in Buffy were when Spike imitated/made fun of broody poofy Angel and his hair gel. You've now got me thinking about Giles' apartment, and I think I'm going insane.

  16. I'm mostly sure they had to redo the apartment after it got ruined, which would account for the same apartment looking very different. However, in your honor, I posted to the local Whedon group's FB page, because at least four of them will have answers if they're around and reading it. I'll let you know if we turn anything up.

I'm super psyched that you're leaving a comment! I might not respond to each and every one, but I read them all. You guys rock!
