50 Shades of more fucking hypocrisy

Since so many of you sent me this story, I feel like I can't go into the weekend without commenting on it. I guess Universal is all upset because the plagiarized book they bought the film rights for is getting ripped off by a porn studio that I guess makes boring sex movies for stupid people, and I feel like none of this really matters, because this is truly the end of days.

Read the story at the hive of misogyny that always has their finger on the pulse of what's important to women who like to bitch about other women's parenting choices and how they're not as good as their own.

I feel like anything I say in the matter will just be one solitary cry lost under a landside of hypocrisy, so have a gander at my post about the first time something like this went down. I feel basically the same.

    1. "James admitted there was no methodology, no outline and no structure when writing the book."

      No shit? I COULDN'T TELL.

    2. None of those things are necessarily bad IF you are a good writer and able to think of plots off the top of your head. The problem is of course that she isn't.

    3. I mean.....the Twilight Saga doesn't count as an outline or a structure? Because.

    6. I love how she says that the publicity isn't "fun" anymore, and it's "embarrassing". Well, maybe you should have thought about that before you decided to make money off a fanfic, James.

    7. I found this comment particularly funny....

"When considering some of the spiteful comments this book has received from people behaving like spoiled brats , I can see why she is finding all the publicity hard to deal with. She's a first time novelist and is probably not used to all the scrutiny she is receiving [many people who become famous, find fame difficult - look at poor Amy Winehouse.] I just wonder how many of these self-imposed critics would cope with their own brand of criticism from other people if they ever managed to write a successful novel themselves."

      AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  2. Amen about The...uh...Schmir. A blogger I really like writes for the site, but it seems like everything on it is sniping or negativity in one form or another. And we really need more of that between women.

  3. I had rather assumed the official movie was going to be porn, since otherwise it's two hours of them saying the same five lines over and over and occasionally eating. In which case the lawsuit makes sense.

    1. I'm with you! If the "official" movie isn't porn, what's it going to be? There's certainly no plot or interesting characters to make a movie out of!

  4. O.M.G. How about Summit sues Universal? Since 50 Shades is ripped off from Twilight then that only makes sense. Stupid. So. Fricken. Stupid. What is the world coming to? This is jjust dumb.

Oh and that whole "I'm embarrassed" thing totally makes sense since Ana refers to her lady parts as "down there" She should be embarrased, not only because these are her messed up fantasies, but because the books are so horribly written and because the book claims to "liberate women" while using the words "down there" and "there" and it basicaaly tells women to do whatever their lovers want and they'll still be happy because hey, "perfect sex where everyone has an orgasm!" will be theirs.

I love how she says the characters have traits from those very familiar to her. Yeah, familiar as in you read the Twilight series 50 times, and now you think Bella and Edward are real people.

    AAAAHHHHRRRGGG!

  5. I'm stuck on the part where people try to claim this isn't porn. Bad characters, absurd, contrived, situations and lots of sex make a porn. How does the fact that it's in print form make it not porn?

  7. Here's why I want this movie to be made: I want to see if they make José the ridiculous "Dios mío" caricature that he seems to be in these books, and I want to see some serious backlash because of it if they do. I can't believe I haven't heard major flack over that (I'm still not over this from the first of your recaps that mentioned it). I haven't read the books and I'm not about to get anywhere near them or the movies, but I can't imagine that it isn't as bad as I think it is, especially considering how enlightened she is about women and relationships.

  8. Thanks for sharing the PW article, which just took me to a higher level of annoyance than I ever though possible. In the PW article, I was particularly bothered with commentators defending EL James and saying that she is the new type of novelist. They compared her writing style to how rock music (when it first appeared on the scene) was offensive to the old generation and then rock became the new norm.

So I had to post a comment:

I'm surprised about comments claiming her books are the new style of writing. People argue that the writing industry and storytelling are changing, and she is ushering in the next generation of novelists.

So grammar errors, misplaced modifiers, incorrect punctuation, flimsy characters, inconsistent and contrived plot points, misspellings, incorrect word usage, and stilted dialogue are the new standard in publishing?

I love romance books. I have read and enjoyed erotica. I have friends who write both traditional romance and erotica. They work hard to craft their stories, and their editors work with them for months to publish a quality book. I have no problem with this genre story being popular and getting an award. This type of story is a great escape from the pressures of reality, and I read romance books for that escape fac
tor since these stories guarantee a happy ending--which doesn't always happen in our own lives. However, I do have issue with the lack of quality editing and writing that went into publishing this book. I guess others are more forgiving readers, but these type of errors pull me out of the book (no matter how compelling the story), and it is difficult for me to ignore them, especially when there are so many. I recognize that writers will break grammar rules for effect and style, which works when used sparingly and with purpose. Most errors in this book were not stylistic.

I expect more for my money when I purchase a book sold by a reputable publisher. If a total disregard for grammar and plot are the new style of writing, I'll stick to the classics.

    1. How can they make that comparison?? Sure, rock music was edgy for the time when it came out and it set an older generation on its ear. THe lyrics and beats offended many. But they weren't poorly constructed pieces of music and that's the difference.

  12. I completely lost it when people said 50 Shades wasn't porn and there's a "deeper storyline". Can someone tell me when we bumped our heads and woke up in Bizarro world?
